Mushers

Mike and Caitlin Santos
| Mike and Caitlin are both originally
from Massachusetts. Mike has been involved with dogs his whole life,
his grandfather and godfather raised beagles and he always loved being
around the dogs. As a kid, the only thing his parents could get him
to read were accounts of polar explorers getting stranded on the ice
watching their ships get crushed by the ice and making a heroic dash
for land with their sled dogs. |

He always thought those days were long gone, then Will Steger reenacted Robert Perry’s historic trek to the North Pole and National Geographic chronicled it on their weekly program Explorer. That was it, Mike decided he would become a polar explorer. Quickly he had his first sled dogs and in time he heard about the Iditarod. Since then he has been striving to put himself in a position to make his dreams of running the Iditarod a reality. |
| Caitlin, has been claiming that she “deserved a dog” since she was 10 years old. When her parents denied her this right, they probably had no idea it would intensify her desire, eventually leading her to own more 40 dogs. After high school, Caitlin got her first dog and soon after went to Montana and Alaska to help others train their sled dogs. Eventually, Caitlin returned to Massachusetts to finish college and there she began working with Mike. A trained mathematician, she particularly enjoys counting puppies. | ![]() Caitlin and Ice |
Together we have already achieved much in the past couple of years and believe we are well on our way to achieving our goals. We hope you take the time to meet our dogs and read about their accomplishments in The Howler. And if you are ever in Denali, stop by and see us. See you on the trail. -Mike and Caitlin |
